Travis Hunter, the No. 1 player in the class of 2022, has committed to Jackson State University. The star cornerback made the announcement Wednesday afternoon.

Hunter seemed to be committed to Florida State University, the alma mater of Jackson State football head coach Deion Sanders aka Coach Prime. He had been committed to Florida State since March 2020. Instead, he will join Sanders’ team as a member of the secondary. Fittingly enough, one of the young top cornerbacks in today’s game will now learn from one of the greatest corners to ever grace the gridiron.

Hunter, who attends Collins High School in Suwanee, Georgia, becomes the highest rated recruit to commit to a Historically Black College and University. He also becomes the first player to commit to an FCS school in ESPN’s rankings for high school football players.

“Florida State has always been a beacon for me. I grew up down there, that’s where my roots are, and I never doubted that I would play for the Seminoles.

“Historically Black Colleges and Universities have a rich history in football. I want to be part of that history, and more, I want to be part of that future. I'm making this decision so that I can light the way for others to follow.“

“It’s a dream that is hard to let go of, but sometimes we are called to step into a bigger future than the one we imagined for ourselves. For me, that future is at Jackson State University. While Hunter acknowledged that he had long eyed Florida State, he felt that he had an opportunity to create change by attending Jackson State.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities

“Historically Black Colleges and Universities have a rich history in football,” Hunter said in his post. “I want to be part of that history, and more, I want to be part of that future. I am making this decision so that I can light the way for others to follow, make it a little easier for the next player to recognize that HBCUs may be everything you want and more.”

Sheduer Sanders, Jackson State’s quarterback and the son of Deion Sanders, was the highest-ranked player to sign at Jackson State. That distinction now belongs to Hunter.

Along with Hunter, Jackson State has also signed top recruits Trovnte Rucker, Katrone Evans, and Quaydarius Davis.
