J.R. Smith, the two-time NBA champion (Cleveland Cavaliers 2016 & the Los Angeles Lakers 2020 ) is enrolling at (HBCU) North Carolina A&T to pursue a degree in liberal studies. J.R. Smith is also considering competing for North Carolina A&T 's Division I golf team.
After high school, Smith first planned to attend the University of North Carolina, but he had an opportunity to become a professional before enrolling. So Smith entered the NBA after being selected in the first round of the 2004 NBA draft by the New Orleans Hornets.
In addition to the Lakers and Cavaliers, J.R. Smith has also played for the Denver Nuggets and New York Knicks, as well as for the Zhejiang Golden Bulls of the Chinese Basketball Association.
"Very special. I can't wait to be part of an HBCU Family."
Well, what can we say…times are truly changing! J.R. Smith, played 16 years in the NBA and could have quietly road off into the sunset as a champion but instead he decided to continue his education and at an HBCU. And it IS absolutely awesome and inspirational to witness today so many high profile, African American athletes like J.R. Smith, Deion Sanders aka Coach Prime, Hercy Miller and others CHOOSE HBCU’s to extend their careers and education. At HBCUGO.TV we think that speaks volumes about the legacy and future of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
"Very special. I can't wait to be part of an HBCU Family." great to talk with @TheRealJRSmith here at @WyndhamChamp Pro-Am. Smith is enrolling at @ncatsuaggies (went to NBA straight from HS) and hopes to get NCAA Clearance to play on the @NCATAGGIES Golf Team. @WFMY #wfmysports pic.twitter.com/GzWuiVb95Q— Brian Hall (@bhallwfmy) August 11, 2021
